Situated in Chengdu, the capital city of Sichuan Province, Southwest Electric Power Design Institute (SWEPDI) is a subordinate company under the Electric Power Project Consultant Group of China.
Since founded in 1961, SWEPDI, with more than 40 years 'development, has developed into a major designer of large-sized power plants in China. It is not only honored as one of the one hundred top units with comprehensive capability of exploration, surveying and designs but also ranked among the first-rate enterprises under the State Electric Power Corporation of China. In 1995, SWEPDI became one of the first enterprises certificated by the authorities of the state electric exploration-survey and design to have reached International Standard Organization 9001(ISO9001) and to be certificated by the State Foreign Trade Ministry for the qualification for overseas businesses.

SWEPDI is blessed with a staff of 1200 professionals specialized in over 30 fields of exploration-survey and designs. Of the faculty, there are 400 professionals with higher professional tittles and about 300 with intermediate professional tittles .In addition, SWEPDI has as many as 130 certificated or registered personnel of architects, structure engineers, project-cost valuators, project supervision engineers and professional consultants.

Since founded 40 years ago, SWEPDI has completed 582 major exploration-survey and design projects in electric power generation, transmission and transformation, to be more exactly, 133 electric power generation projects with the total operation capacity of 25120 MW, 247 power transmission projects with total length of 21489 km, 202 power transformation projects with the total operation capacity of 34502 MVA. SWEPDI has also undertaken 23 designs of overseas projects. Its business covers not only all parts of China, but also extends to more than 10 foreign countries, such as Iran, India, Indonesia, Cameroon, Mauritania and Bangladesh.

Since 1978, SWEPDI has won 77 important prizes for exploration-survey and designs: 89 prizes for key scientific researches, 41for demonstration constructions, 37 for information projects, and 15 for computer software developments. SWEPDI has won many prize medals awarded by the government, the ministry and the provincial government. In particular, more than 30 projects of exploration-survey and designs were awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals by the state.

Armed with 40 years’ working experience, SWEPDI is exclusively experienced in its specialized fields, and is of strong ability in the following fields: the exploration-survey and design of the projects of electric power generation, transmission and substation in high mountain areas, high altitude regions, heavy ice places, seashore, desert districts and areas with complicated geographical and geomorphic conditions. SWEPDI is also especially capable of exploring, surveying and designing geothermal power plants, rock soil engineering projects, evaluating the environment effect, flue gas desurphurizating (FGD), and CFB technology of power plants. SWEPDI has rich experiences in CFB power plant design and clean-fuel combustion processing techniques. SWEPDI has designed so far the largest thermal power generation project━the ultra-critical generating unit of 6×600MW of Houshi Power Plant in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, the biggest thermal power project in China, and it also exported the generating unit with air-cooling system of 4×325 MW to Arkla Shazand Power Plant in Iran, the GFB power plant of Baima Power Plant of single generating unit of 1×300 MW, so far the biggest in the world, and the demonstration power plant with CFB technology. SWEPDI has also conducted the power transmission project from Ertan Hydro Power Station to the City of Zigong (SichuanProvince). The project covered high altitude and heavy ice areas.

SWEPDI is one of the first enterprises to practice all-round engineering procurement construction system in China. It contracted the design project with the generating unit of 2×330 MW of Jiangyou Power Plant (Sichuan province)independently and completed the leading contractor of the generating unit of 4×330 MW of Dalate Power Plant (Inner Mongolia).
